Father Sees Strange Line Down Son’s Back, 2 Days Later He’s In Agonizing Pain

A Manchester, England, father whose son had a strange rash appear on his skin was shocked to find out what caused the rash that left his son screaming in agony. Mathew Cocklin said his stepson, Reid-Daley, had returned from an afternoon in the park last July. By evening, Daley was in terrible pain and his skin was covered in what looked to be serious burns…

Cocklin’s son was not the only child who appeared to be suffering from the same kinds of painful burns. Four other families reported similar symptoms. All of the children had one thing in common: they were playing in a park when their rashes began. Annie Challinor, 7, suffered burn-like blisters on her skin after playing in Clifton Country Park in Greater Manchester.

Three other boys found themselves covered in blisters after playing in Moses Gate Country Park in Bolton, the same park Daley was at when he first noticed the rash. The severe rashes stumped doctors, who initially thought an allergic reaction was the culprit. But as it turned out, the children all came in contact with one particular, very dangerous plant: Heracleum mantegazzianum, otherwise known as the giant hogweed or giant cow parsnip.

“It starts with a red rash like if you slap someone quite hard it goes bright red and slightly raised up and within 48 hours blisters start to appear,” Cocklin said.
